Periodontal Services

You may not think much about your gums, but they are vital for supporting your teeth. When plaque, and hardened plaque called tartar or calculus, form, sensitive gum tissue becomes irritated. Bacteria produced by plaque initiates an infection that breaks down the bond between teeth and gums. As the gum tissue separates from teeth, periodontal pockets form. Bacteria thrive in these pockets, breeding and creating more serious problems. In addition to being the leading cause of tooth loss for American adults, gum disease increases the risk for many overall health problems, including diabetes complications, heart attack, stroke, respiratory problems, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, low-weight birth, and osteoporosis.

Gum disease will not heal if left alone. Only professional intervention can restore proper gum health.

Eighty percent of American adults have some form of gum disease.

  • chart showing healthy gums and gums with periodontal diseaseCleanings/Professional Dental Hygiene – Every six months, healthy dental patients should visit our hygienist for cleanings. During this appointment, the hygienist removes plaque, tartar, and decaying food particles – all of which contribute to bacterial growth. She will also teach you how to properly care for your teeth and gums with daily oral homecare.
  • Deep Cleaning for Gum Disease – If you have bleeding gums, or if your gums are tender, red, or swollen, you may have gingivitis, an early form of gum disease. In this case, our hygienist will recommend a form of periodontal therapy. This procedure may take more than one visit, depending on the scope of the work needed. We will remove the hardened plaque from below your gum line, smooth rough areas on teeth roots where plaque builds up, and apply antibiotic to infected pockets.
  • Periodontal Therapy & SurgeryDr. Chris Chondrogiannis, our periodontist, can perform periodontal surgery in our Bayside dental office. If your gums have become significantly damaged, the best option might be to remove the damaged tissue so that new, healthy tissue will grow in its place. As a periodontist, Dr. Chondrogiannis has two extra years of specialty training in the area of periodontal health and procedures. He offers many gum procedures in the comfort of our dental office.
  • Soft-Tissue Management for Gum Disease – Recovering gum disease patients require more frequent hygiene visits. We’ll develop a customized soft-tissue management plan to reverse the damage caused by gum disease, then to help you deter recurrence.
